Stellenrust Chenin Blanc 2016

August’s wine is the 2016 Stellenrust, Chenin Blanc, South Africa. (£9.15 a bottle from www.thefinewinecompany.co.uk).

Robert Parker says:

“The 2016 Chenin Blanc offers plenty of white peach and tangerine notes on the nose, upfront and bold, and there is nothing wrong with that. The palate is fresh on the entry with crisp acidity, lively with lemon thyme notes infusing the citrus fruit. It sports good body and depth on the finish—a very delicious Chenin Blanc that follows the superb 2015. And look at the recommended retail price… what a bargain!” 91/100

Knipser Blauer Spätburgunder 2013

July’s wine is the 2013 Knipser Blauer Spätburgunder Trocken, Germany. (€10.30 from www.weinundkunst.info).

Robert Parker says:

“Super clear, bright, fresh and floral bouquet with lovely aromatics of red berries and cherries. Fresh, pure and filigreed on the palate, this is a very well-structured, long and aromatic Pinot with a stunning length, stimulating purity and piquancy. The 2013 has a great transparency and tension, but also, the intensity and tannic grip in the finish are extremely stimulating. This is one of the finest Pinot Noirs at this price level that I have ever tasted.” 91/100

Cristiano van Zeller Branco CV 2015

June’s wine is the 2015 Cristiano van Zeller Branco CV, Portugal. (€8.90 from www.garrafeira5estrelas.com).

Robert Parker says:

“This is potentially a brilliant Branco in the making. It was wholly unevolved when seen this summer (2016) in Porto, just before bottling, but it has all the earmarks of a great white. Showing exceptional concentration and equally good structure, this has the intensity and power to support and lift the concentrated fruit.” 87/100

Les Darons by Jeff Carrel 2015

May’s wine is the 2015 Les Darons by Jeff Carrel, Languedoc, France. (£7.85 from www.vinatis.co.uk).

Robert Parker says:

“Looks like another great vintage here. This medium to full-bodied, plump, rounded, downright sexy 2015 has lots of blueberry, violets, and jammy black cherry aromas and flavors; it has terrific purity of fruit, good acidity and an overriding sense of elegance. If it came from a more prestigious appellation in the southern Rhone, it would go for three times the price.” 91-93/100

Wieninger Wiener Riesling 2015

April’s wine is the 2015 Wieninger Wiener Riesling, Austria. (€10.14 from www.wineforum.co.at).

Jancis Robinson says:

“Wines like this make you wonder how on earth fermenting grapes can create aromas and flavours so delicious and varied. Deep and rich on the palate, balanced by bright acidity, the flavours matching the aroma, but with the addition of a dry mineral seam through the middle and just hint of spice that tells me I am in Austria. Intensely fresh but the fruit is so full-flavoured that it builds a harmonious whole with a long finish. Impressive length and VVGV. 17/20″

Cirò Rosso Gaglioppo, Santa Venere 2016

March’s wine is the 2014 Santa Venere Ciro Rosso Classico, Calabria, Italy. (£9.50 from www.thewinesociety.com).

Jancis Robinson says:

“You don’t often come across wines whose price seems genuinely incredibly low but this is one of them … Another stonkingly good value offering from this small denomination on the sole of Italy…This was the favourite of four reds I showed at the 2016 Kerrygold Ballymaloe Literary Festival, even though it was the cheapest. Masses of character and charm. Very good value.” 17/20

Take the guesswork out of buying wine

For many of us, chosing wine comes down to whether the price is just about right – not too cheap, not too expensive – and whether we like the look of the label.
But price and label are not reliable guides to quality. Some £10 boring-looking bottles are as good (or better!) than some £20 sexy-looking bottles.

The experts might agree it’s great but that doesn’t guarantee you’ll like it.

Happily, help is at hand. The wine world is awash with data. The whole industry revolves around ratings, reviews, critics, awards and points – all of which can help us find the hidden gems that top the ratings but don’t break the bank so you can try them for yourself.

Join for £14.99 a month.

We will send you a nice bottle of wine each month that the experts think is worth twice the price. If you like it and want more, let us know and we will get it for you.
If you don’t like it you don’t need to do anything except wait for the next one to arrive.
